Kangaroos defeat Sewanee.

Sewanee, TN – Quarterback Kent Bell threw one touchdown pass and ran for another as the Austin College Kangaroos defeated the Sewanee Tigers 16-13 at McGee Field on Saturday.

Sewanee took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in twelve plays to score first.  RB Blake Mears scored from 5 yards out, but the extra point kick was blocked by the ‘Roos.

AC got on the scoreboard after the Kangaroos recovered a Patrick Shelton fumble at the Tiger 22.  CB Matt Finke forced and recovered the fumble for the ‘Roos.  It only took 5 plays for AC to score, with Kent Bell connecting on an 8-yard pass to Zack Swirczynski.  However, Jonathan Hersch’s extra point try hit the left upright, and was no good.

Austin College took the lead for good with 1:05 to go in the first half on a Kent Bell 29 yard run.  The 10 play, 67 yard drive took 4:17 off the clock, and gave the ‘Roos the halftime lead.

Austin College added to their lead in the third quarter, when Hersch connected on a 23 yard field goal, giving AC a 16-6 lead.  That score was set up by a Tiger fumble.  Matt Orr sacked Sewanee QB Patrick Shelton, who fumbled.  Jared Baker fell on the ball at the Sewanee 13, setting up the AC field goal.

Sewanee had a long drive in the fourth quarter that stalled at the Kangaroo 10 yard line, setting up a short field goal, but that was blocked by Matt Finke.  Sewanee did score with :47 remaining in the game on a 19 yard pass from Shelton to Patrick Scott, but the Kangaroos recovered the onside kick, and ran out the clock.

With the win, Austin College evens its record at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC, while Sewanee falls to 1-4, 0-4.  The Kangaroos return home on Saturday afternoon as they host new SCAC and Division III member Birmingham Southern at Apple Stadium.  Kickoff is at 1:00 pm Central time.
