DANVILLE, KY.   The Austin College Kangaroos dropped the ball three times, two of which led to short Centre Colonels drives as Centre defeated Austin 21-14 at Farris Stadium in Danville, KY on Saturday.

Quarterback Jarrod Williams was 10 of 12 for 67 yards and one touchdown pass of 21 yards to Rob Pope, and running back Josh Ware rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown as the Colonels improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC.

Centre scored first in the second quarter after a Kent Bell fumble on a pitch play that gave the Colonels the ball on the AC 20 yard line.  It only took three plays for Centre to score on the pass play to Pope.  AC evened the score just before halftime on an 10 play 55 yard drive when Ross Hasten converted on a one yard run.  The Kangaroos didn’t have a third down on that drive until the final run for the touchdown on third and goal.

In the third quarter, Centre took the opening kickoff, but only got to their own 33 before punting, and AC took the ball at their own 15 yard line.  After a key 20 yard pass from Andy Braly to Eric Shon put the ball at the AC 35, the ‘Roos quickly finished the drive capped by a 38 yard touchdown run by Kent Bell to take their first lead of the game.

Centre came right back on the next possession and drove 75 yards for the tying score on a Josh Ware 14 yard run.

On the next drive, Bell fumbled again, after a fake pitch, which Centre recovered at the AC 35 yard line.  It took the Colonels 9 plays to drive the 35 yards, but Centre scored on a Brian Hodge 2 yard run, which was set up by Grant Conliffe 12 yard pass to Kyle Barnette.

The Kangaroos has one last chance to even the score on a drive that started with 10:16 left in the game.  Starting from their 4, the ‘Roos drove to the Centre 19 yard line.  Consecutive procedure penalties moved the ball back to the 29, including an illegal motion penalty on Ross Hasten that negated a 13 yard pass from Braly to Seifert.  Braly was unable to connect with Evan Coachman on third down or Eric Shon on 4th down, and Centre was able to run out the final 1:47.

The ‘Roos were led in rushing by Bell, who had 10 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Ross Hasten added 48 yards and a td on 10 carries.  Braly was 4-9 for 52 yards passing, and Eric Shon caught two balls for 38 yards.

Austin College drops to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the SCAC, and will return home to face new SCAC member Colorado College on Saturday, September 29, at 1:00 pm at Jerry E. Apple Stadium.  The game will be broadcast worldwide on Sportsjuice.com and Teamline, and in-stadium audio will be available on 99.9 FM.
