SHERMAN, Texas — East Texas Baptist capitalized on four Austin College turnovers in the fourth quarter to score 10 points and secure a 16-6 victory in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Apple Stadium.
The loss drops Austin College to 0-3 on the year, including 0-2 in conference, while ETBU improves to 2-1 with a 2-0 ASC mark this year.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the ’Roos got on the board first on a 38 yard field goal by Clint Wren, and added another three points when Wren connected from 31 yards out with 4:13 left in the third quarter. ETBU knotted the score at six when quarterback Phil Van Cleave took it in from nine yards out, though the point after attempt failed.
The Tigers broke the tie early in the fourth quarter when Dylan Brown intercepted a JR Ohr pass and returned it 43 yards to the Austin College 2 yard line, and Randy Whittington plunged into the end zone one play later to give ETBU a 13-6 lead. The Tigers defense clamped down on the ’Roos passing game, picking off two more Ohr passes to shut down any hopes of an Austin College comeback. Jeremy Seeton nailed a 42 yard field goal with four minutes remaining to seal the victory for ETBU.
Brian Womack led the ’Roos ground attack with 65 yards on 18 carries, while Ohr finished the game completing 12-of-32 passes for 128 yards and four picks. Ohr was also sacked five times on the day, including three times by ETBU’s Chad Glover. Glover finished the game with 13 tackles.
The Tigers were led offensively by RoShawn Johnson, who gained 57 yards on 15 carries. Johnson also caught four balls for 34 yards. Van Cleave finished the game completing 7-of-15 passes for 88 yards. Matt Newton picked off a pair of passes for the Tigers.
Scooter Means led the ’Roos defensively with 11 stops, including 3.5 for loss, and also forced and recovered a fumble. Derrek Wageneck blocked two punts in the game, while Thomas Derricks registered 2.5 sacks.
