Austin College 87
Howard Payne 83 (2 OT)
SHERMAN - The Austin College men's basketball team used 10 extra minutes and
two extra periods to defeat Howard Payne University 87-83 Saturday afternoon
in Sherman. Anthony Holman put in his second huge performance of the
weekend netting 24 points and 6 rebounds in the win. Holman was 13-15 from
the free-throw line.
The 'Roos took a 33-37 lead into halftime, largely on the strength
of 45% field goal shooting. Howard Payne, though, looking for their first
win of the season came out strong in the second half grabbing an 8-point
lead with 11:40 left to play. Austin College would trail until the 26
second mark, when Adam Shor put in a lay-up to give the 'Roos a 62-61 lead.
After a Chris Caudle steal and free-throw Austin College held a 2-point lead
with 14 seconds to play. When Caudle missed his second free-throw Howard
Payne was able to push the ball up the floor and tie the game on a Kendrick
Johnson seventeen-foot jumper with three seconds to go and send the game
into overtime.
Austin College again held the lead late in the overtime period,
claiming a 4-point lead on two Holman free-throws with 2:42 to play.
Johnson closed the gap to two with a jumper on the next possession and
Holman would stretch it back out to three with a free-throw at the 1:40
mark. The Yellow Jackets Bryan Temple tied the game on a 3-point shot with
1:25 left in the first extra period. Austin College's James Hill was unable
to convert on two inside shots, and the 'Roos were able to hold HPU without
a shot in the last 15 seconds to force the second overtime.
The second extra period was back and forth with HPU striking first
and Austin College matching baskets until the 49 second mark when the 'Roos
took the lead for good on a traditional three-point play by Shor. Holman
grabbed a steal on the next possession and threw down a dunk to give Austin
College a 5-point lead. HPU would climb back to within two, but four
straight Kangaroo free-throws sealed the victory for Austin College.
Shor and Caudle both reached double figures for the 'Roos with 21
and 15 points respectively. The win moves Austin College to 2-4 on the
season and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference play.
Howard Payne (0-5, 0-4) was led by center Tim Stary with 17 points.
